Day 17 Reliegos to Leon

2015.05.19 20:53

Hello from Leon,

Its the last major city before I reach Santiago and im glad it is. Last night i woke up that in my shorts and top im freezing. it was so cold that i put the term "wrap up" into a new level. i woke up at 7 and left the albergue just before 8. It is really funny how my body needs to wake up too. literally the first 4 km is just painful than slowly i feel that my body and bones are ready for the challange and the pain is gone :-) I had 27 km today. i decided to wear shorts which was a terrible mistake and before i was out of the village i had to

change. today was nice weather again but very windy and little bit cold. i walked almost 8 km for my breakfast but i found a really nice place so it all made sense. it was only 19 km till Leon from there and i was excited. the walk today was really boring. basically just walking next to the main road to Leon. few villages but really not much to see or mention. i was like 5 km away where just before i had to do a little bit of a hiking this old man stoped me and asked if i speak Spanish. i sad no unfortunately. he than went on and did a short (5 min) long monologue about me walking alone and how dangerous is that. he kept asking where are my friends and boyfriend. ( good question man :-)) but i just kept telling him "solo persona". after 5 min i just said ok i understand (lied) thanks. byebye. his dog looked at me really sadly as well so i kept thinking about my conversation with Jackie a few days ago on Cohelo's book and meeting the devil :-). i have really no clue what he was talking about but i properly freaked out and thought about a 1000 ideas on how to stab someone with my walking stick if i need to. i was scared for the first time. when i finally reached the top of the hill i saw 2 people it was Eva and Max! YES!!i thought great im rescued :-) we walked together a little bit than i reached Leon. i decided to go the municipal as in previous places i really liked them. all of a sudden my feet started to hurt again - steange that every time i realise im close to my destination my body starts to shut down. usually the municipals are really easy to find - well not in Leon. for the first time i got lost and couldnt locate the street and before i realised i was almost out of Leon. finally this nice Spanish lady showed me the place ( which i passed like 20 min ago). turns out this is not even close to be as nice as previous ones and the next 15 min i just sat and thought about packing up and leaving. but i was too tired so decided to stay. they wanted to give me a top bed  but since it was still early i just asked the guy if i could take a different bed as my feet is in pain so to my surprise he said ok :-) i heard later on that people tried tha same trick but didnt work so i was really glad i asked early. In the afternoon i needed to do laundry but its always a dilemma what should i do first. eat? visit the city center? shower? sleep? so because of the siesta everything closes at 2. i decided to go for a quick drink and lunch. when i came back i sat down for a min which turned into a 2 hr nap. when i woke up it was 5.15 so i quickly did laundry but accidentally put all my pants into the wash so i had nothing to go out in... lesson learned again. anyway i went out for a little walk and came back an hour later. it is so cold outside that i just gave up on Leon. its a nice city otherwise. i felt like all of a sudden im back in real world. i heard an ambulance car passing for the first time in 3 weeks it was so weird. the loudest noise i heard in the past few days was church bell. i saw homeless people again, Jehova's witnesses, Burger King even an Irish pub lol. it was good to back in a big city but on this journey i still prefer small villages where everyone smiles at me wishes me a great day or Buen Camino and where im not completly alone. This is probably the only problem with doing the Camino on your own. but its ok. new day tomorrow with new adventures. i am looking forward to the next few days. everyone told me that its gonna be beautuful. i hope so since i still have to climb up to 1500m in 3 days time and to 1400m again just a few days before reaching Santiago which is now only 300 km away!!!

i will try to sleep now. its freezing cold again. May in Spain... but at least still no rain!

Lots of love,

Viki
